  • Benicia has moderate weather resulting in dry, warm summers and mild winters. The average temperature is 68 degrees and the rainfall is typically 18 inches a year. Located on the waterfront, the residents of Benicia benefit from cool ocean breezes during the summertime. Surrounded by water on two sides and miles of open space to the North, Benicia is located in the southernmost section of Solano County, overlooking the Carquinez Strait, which connects San Pablo Bay to the West and the Sacramento Delta to the East. The City encompasses 14 square miles, and is located 35 miles northeast of San Francisco and 57 miles southwest of Sacramento. A waterfront City of 28,000, Benicia is known for it's small town charm, history and high quality of life. The last San Francisco Chronicle newspaper survey of Bay Area communities named Benicia the #1 place to raise a family.
  • History is integral to the City of Benicia. Founded in 1847, Benicia just recently celebrated it's 150 Centennial Anniversary. In 1850, Benicia and Monterey were the first two cities in California to incorporate. On February 5, 1853, the California Legislature voted to move into Benicia's new City Hall and make it the State Capitol. Benicia was the State Capital for one year. In 1854, the Legislature relocated the State Capital to Sacramento.
  • Benicia hosts a variety of events throughout the year that are enjoyed by residents and visitors, individuals and families. Events range from the Annual Peddlers Fair, Handicraft Fair, Opening Day on the Straits, Glass Studios Open House, Heritage Home Tour, Arts in the Park, Christmas at the Clocktower, Downtown Farmers Market and many others.

  • Benicia has a full service marina and several municipal parks, and is home to the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park and Benicia State Recreation area, a nearly 500 acre open space area located adjacent to Southampton Bay.
  • The town library is full service and state of the art, offering internet access, children's and literacy services and an art gallery. Open seven days a week during the school year.
